Adapting to a new culture with its new customs, new foods, new music, new driving habits, new weather, and a new language or dialect is called acculturation. Moving to a new place brings so many changes all at once, that it can be exhilarating at times and overwhelming at other times. Even if you have previously worked abroad or lived in another Arab country, you can expect to experience phases of acculturation when moving to Kuwait. Moving can bring moments of uncertainty, confusion, misunderstandings and mistakes, even if you were very confident and comfortable living and working in the previous country. There are individual differences in the length and intensity of each phase of acculturation, but if you have enough patience and support to adapt through all four phases of acculturation, you can gain new skills, learn more about yourself, and develop a surprising level of comfort in your new home. Andrea Al Adwani, MA is a Family Therapist who studied in the USA & holds degrees in Psychology, Human Development, and Community Counseling. She and her husband have lived in Kuwait for 7 years with their 2 daughters. Andrea provides counseling for children, teens, young adults, as well as adults in individual, couple, and family sessions.
